How I Work with ADHD

I have a keen interest in working with clients with ADHD, and my approach goes far beyond simply reviewing diagnostic criteria. Instead, I aim to help you understand your unique experience and how it shapes your life story.

Understanding Your Unique ADHD Experience

Given the wide spectrum of ADHD and its varied impact on individuals, I help you understand your own experience and embodiment of ADHD symptoms, as well as the impact of growing up with (often undiagnosed) ADHD.

Many people with ADHD have spent years feeling misunderstood or labeled as "lazy," "unmotivated," or "difficult." These experiences can lead to layers of shame, self-criticism, and a distorted sense of self. In therapy, we explore how these narratives have affected you and work to develop a more compassionate understanding of your neurodivergent mind.

We'll examine how your ADHD manifests across different areas of your life (work, relationships, self-care) and identify the environments where you thrive versus those that drain your energy. This exploration helps clarify which challenges stem from your neurodivergence and which might be related to coping mechanisms you've developed in response to a neurotypical world.

Developing Personalised Strategies

Together, we will explore personalised strategies to address ADHD symptoms in a way that fits your unique experience. Unlike generic advice that doesn't account for individual differences, we'll craft approaches specifically tailored to your strengths, challenges, and life circumstances.

This might involve adapting your environment to better support your executive functioning, developing systems that work with rather than against your natural tendencies, and learning to harness the creative and intuitive aspects of ADHD that can be genuine strengths when properly channeled.

If required, I can also guide you through the assessment process, helping you navigate the often complex healthcare system to access appropriate evaluation and support.

ADHD in Relationships

I also work with couples where one or both partners have ADHD, helping them understand how neurodivergence influences communication, connection, conflict and intimacy.

ADHD can create unique relationship dynamics, from mismatched expectations around time management to differences in how partners process and express information and emotions. Without understanding the role of ADHD these differences can lead to recurring conflicts and feelings of disconnection.

In couples therapy, I focus equally on both partners, recognising that each person brings their own perspective, struggles and needs to the relationship. I emphasise that while ADHD is not a choice, both partners share responsibility for how they respond to the ADHD-related conflicts that arise. We explore how ADHD is not simply one partner's "problem" but rather an integral part of the relationship dynamic that affects both individuals.

We work to transform frustration into curiosity, helping the neurotypical partner understand ADHD patterns while supporting the partner with ADHD in developing strategies that consider both individuals' needs. This balanced approach ensures that neither partner feels blamed or solely responsible for making changes.

ADHD Awareness & Strategies Programme

In addition to individual and couples therapy, I offer a 12-session ADHD Awareness & Strategies Programme, focusing specifically on deepening self-understanding and developing personalised strategies for everyday life, from executive functioning and time management to emotional regulation and self-acceptance.

This structured programme combines psychoeducation with practical skill-building
